I had to use 2013 version downloaded from Valve servers.
Mainboard: GA-6VXD7 (year 2001)
VIA 694x chipset (requires simple pin-mod to support Tualatin CPUs)
CPU: 2x Pentium III-S 1.4GHz SL5XL Tualatin (year 2002)
RAM: 2 GB Kingston PC133 CL2 SDRAM (4x512MB)
64GB Sandisk SSD
Asus Radeon HD4650 AGP (year 2008)
Windows XP Pro SP3
90-100 watts under load (300W Fortron SFX PSU)
Recorded by capturing HDMI output. Sound is also generated directly through HDMI, internal sound card was disabled.
I downloaded these versions from official Valve servers:
2013.07.01 HL2 Client 222 7243428813874054245
2013.07.01 HL2 Base 221 3139631820230520823
there are tools using Steam API like Depot Downloader which can pick old versions from Steam archive.
Modern versions of HL2:DM and CS:S worked fine (only one dll file needed to be swapped with older version). I used old (2019) copy of official Steam client.
