The Haunted House of 14 West 10th Street
Known as "The House of Death," 14 West 10th Street in Greenwich Village, New York City, is infamous for its chilling paranormal activity. Built in the late 1850s, the brownstone has a dark history with over 20 reported deaths within its walls, leading to numerous ghost sightings and strange occurrences.
The most famous ghost is that of former resident Mark Twain, who lived there from 1900 to 1901. Witnesses have reported seeing Twain’s spirit, recognizable by his white suit, wandering the halls. One resident, Jan Bryant Bartell, documented her experiences with the paranormal in her book, "Spindrift: Spray from a Psychic Sea." She described feeling icy hands touch her and witnessing ghostly apparitions.
In the 1980s, the house gained further notoriety when Joel Steinberg, a lawyer, was convicted of murdering his illegally adopted daughter, Lisa. This tragic event seemed to amplify the haunting, with residents reporting increased poltergeist activity, unexplained cold spots, and eerie noises.
To this day, 14 West 10th Street remains one of New York City’s most haunted locations, with its legacy of death and the supernatural chilling both locals and visitors alike.
