In this poem, Clare expresses his love for solitary walks during twilight. He describes narrow lanes adorned with dew-covered thorns, where snails emerge from the grass, their black shells sprouting delicate horns. The meadows, recently mown, release a fragrant scent into the sultry air. Bees, tired and forlorn, search in vain for newly bloomed flowers.

Meanwhile, hidden quails in the juicy corn cry out for wet feet, and the rarely seen land rail utters its mysterious "craik, craik" like voices from underground. As evening descends, the light fades into gloom, creating a magical atmosphere.
