(10 Mar 1977) Rhodesian Prime MInister Ian Smith announced the appointment of a new defence minister as part of a cabinet re-shuffle. The job went to the former Lands And Natural Resources Minister Mark Partridge. Scenes of one of the fighting units over which Mr Partridge will have, at least, political control is the famous " Selous Scouts ", considered to be among the elite of Rhodesia's armed forces. They're named after the famous scout and naturalist - Courtenay Selous - who made his name in Southern Africa earlier this century, mainly in the company of South African General - Jan Smuts. While much of the scouts training seems no different to that given ordinary regular soldiers, it goes much further. The selection is critical and the failure rate is high. Out of eighty who start, only about fifteen complete the course, not just because they have to learn to survive in the bush.
