(13 Aug 2018) As Pakistan's new lawmakers were sworn into office on Monday, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was taken by an armoured car from his jail cell at Adiala prison to the accountability court in the capital, Islamabad, to face more corruption charges.
Sharif was seen waving at supporters from inside the vehicle after leaving the court later on Monday.
A lawyer for Sharif told the Associated Press outside the courthouse that there was a lack of transparency in the court proceedings.
"Our hands are tied, we are not allowed to speak, even lawyers are not allowed to attend open proceedings of the trial. Where in the world are lawyers stopped from attending court hearings," said Rafaqat Dogar.
Sharif, who is currently appealing a 10-month prison sentence for the misuse of fund to purchase luxury apartments in Britain, was arrested on July 13 after returning from London.
His daughter Maryam was sentenced to seven years in the same case and her husband to one year. Both are appealing their sentences.
Pakistan's newly elected parliament convened Monday for the first time since last month's general elections which saw former cricket star turned politician Imran Khan's party win most seats, propelling him toward the post of the country's next prime minister.
