In the search for new and better cancer treatments to improve survival and reduce side effects, clinical trials are essential.
To create a better standard of care for everyone, clinical trial participants should represent all the people who may benefit from an experimental treatment -- study results are more reliable for everyone when there’s diversity among clinical trial participants.
Yet people of color have been underrepresented in cancer clinical trials in the U.S. for decades, even when they have a similar or higher risk of developing the type of cancer being studied in the trial.
Representation matters, and clinical trial opportunities should be available to everyone so that new therapies and improved outcomes are a possibility for people of every race and ethnicity.
The question is, what needs to happen to bring about change?
