Adho Mukha Svanasana is one of the most important asana in yoga with lots of health benefits. Also known as Downward Facing Dog, this pose helps to remove a sense of stress or heaviness in our body, increases the focus of mind and concentration, strengthen hip, shoulder, knee and thigh muscles, improves digestive systems and blood circulation.
According to some studies, Adho Mukha Svanasana Relieves Stress and Anxiety:
“Different studies has been proven that regular practice of this Adho Mukha Svanasana on a regular basis can improve blood circulation to the brain and helps to reduce the stress and anxiety, because while doing this asana our head is going against the gravity toward, down, which helps to improve the blood flow to the brain, this ensure brain get sufficient amount of oxygen and other vital nutrients, this is very beneficial in relieving the stress and anxiety.”
How to do:
• Tuck your toes under, bring your hands slightly further forward and press firmly through your palms,
• On the next exhale lift your hips up to the sky. Keep pressing down firmly through your palms, fingers should spread wide so there's plenty of space in between each finger, knuckles draw down, feet are hip width or wider.
• Draw your shoulder down your back and navel in towards your spine. Let your head hang, jaw is relaxed and gaze softly towards your knees.
• Aim here is to find length in the spine, knees can be slightly bent if needed. Heels aim to draw down towards the mat but don't worry if they don't reach.
• Hold here for 10 breaths. Use your ujjayi breath.
• You can paddle feet and paddle the legs to find flexibility and movement in this pose.
