In a stark departure from the Bharatiya Janata Party's proclamations of "Jahan Jhuggi, Wahin Makaan" (Homes where there are slums), a forceful demolition drive unfolded near the Nizamuddin Dargah on Mathura Road this Tuesday.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs carried out the demolition drive, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The bulldozing continued until the release of this report, displacing thousands of residents and rendering them homeless.
Residents of the razed shanties contend that a notice served on the 18th gave them a mere three days to vacate their homes. Within this short timeframe, bulldozers arrived, executing the eviction orders with precision.
Faced with the imminent loss of their homes, residents sought legal recourse and obtained a 15-day stay from the High Court. Shockingly, this court-ordered reprieve was blatantly ignored by the authorities, and the bulldozers moved in without consideration for the legal intervention.
Upon our arrival at the site, a scene of desperation unfolded as residents salvaged their belongings, grappling with the sudden upheaval in their lives.
Allegations of police brutality have surfaced, with residents claiming that excessive force was employed against them during the eviction process.
Most affected residents are daily-wage laborers or domestic workers, intensifying concerns about their livelihoods, particularly amid Delhi's harsh winter. Vulnerable groups, including school-going children, pregnant women, and elderly individuals with health issues, now find themselves in precarious situations.
The aftermath of the demolition has not only left residents homeless but has also disrupted rent payments to landlords in the vicinity, impacting local builders and landlords.
Delhi has witnessed a concerted effort to clear encroachments in recent months. However, such actions are expected to adhere to court orders mandating the provision of alternative housing before any demolition. The lack of effective rehabilitation measures in this case underscores a broader trend observed in Nizamuddin.
While authorities argue that these slums are illegal and have existed for over 40 years, residents counter with claims of possessing essential documents such as electricity and water bills.
The incident near Nizamuddin raises critical questions about the ethical dimensions of urban planning and the welfare of marginalized communities in the city.
