Side effects matter …
Talking with your Doctor & listening matters…
Working in Psych Hospital I see A LOT OF THINGS in adolescents & adults…
Some,*ok, A LOT* of them are horrifying…
IF - the answer is as simple as stopping medication -that's like the golden ticket!
In the case of Singulair the side effects will go away if the drug is stopped
The problem lies in the cases where the drug wasn’t stopped, and the side effects weren’t recognized, and those children are no longer alive because of it.
Singulair has had a black box warning for serious side effects for YEARS
Many other Drugs have BLACK BOX warnings- including MANY antidepressants when used in Teens
As healthcare providers lets do the work to INFORM our patients
As Patients & Parents lets do the work to ASK & BE INFORMED
Its OUR JOB to work as a TEAM; Doctor/PA/NP & Patient/parent to decide which medications are right for us and our children.
Ps. read the handout the pharmacy gives you- warnings & side effects will be on it
P.p.s remember not everyone experiences side effects…
As a parent, it’s so important to monitor your child for side effects anytime they start a new medication
For my kids, I go as far as to not give that medication if they’re going to sleep within the next several hours or if they’re going to be away from me, I like to monitor them closely when starting something new.
Monitor for allergic reactions, changes in sleep changes in behavior, changes and appetite, rashes, diarrhea etc
Life gets busy and sometimes these changes can be so subtle.
Let this be a REMINDER for all of us to watch SO closely when our kids are given new medication… ANY MEDICATION
