Reuben’s Train is a favorite old time train song. Clawhammer guitar turns out to be a pretty good way of getting your guitar to sound like a train. This version is in open D tuning and I learned it from Steve Baughman (Steve Baughman Clawhammer Guitar). It’s one of the first clawhammer guitar songs that I learned to play. It’s also one of the first YouTube videos that I did, but now I’ve added some vocals. I got most of the lyrics from Frank Proffitt and Doc Watson, then I added some of my own. That’s how folk music goes.

Lyrics:
Reuben had a train and he laid it on the track, he rode it to the Lord knows where. It’s oh Lordy me and it’s oh Lordy my, he rode it to the Lord knows where.
Reuben blew the whistle and the fireman rang the bell, they rolled down them long steel rails. Reuben told the fireman, “Keep shoveling coal, let’s see just how fast she can go!”
The fireman shook his head, said, “We’ll all end up dead, Lord have mercy on our souls!” Reuben he just laughed and he pulled the throttle back, “Let’s see just how fast she can go!”
Reuben had a wreck and it broke old Reuben’s neck, but it didn’t hurt a hair on my head. Now I’m walking down the track just hoping to get back, 900 miles away from home.
If I make it back to you, you can beat me black and blue, I’m never gonna leave my shanty home. And it’s oh Lordy me, oh Lordy my, he rode it to the Lord knows where.
