(8 Nov 2021) Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday welcomed his Colombian counterpart Ivan Duque to begin a three-day visit to Israel.
Colombia is to open a trade office in Jerusalem, a move seen by Israel as support for its claim of sovereignty over the city. Colombia's embassy is in Tel Aviv.
Herzog hailed Colombia's accession to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency and urged the country to use its role in the world body to pressure Iran into giving up its nuclear program.
"I hope that this position will allow you to promote diplomatic efforts to fight the Iranian nuclear program," Herzog said.
Duque is to meet with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett during the day and will lay a wreath at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem.
