Today we are in Berlin at Alexanderplatz, which is the former East German city centre. Alexanderplatz is a rather large square quite close to Berlin’s famous Television Tower, and it is a busy public transport hub, connecting regional trains, S-Bahn, underground (U-Bahn), and tram services.
In this film we visit Alexanderplatz on a cold February night and take a close look at the available public transport options.
We start outside on the square, which is crossed by four tram lines: M2, M4, M5, and M6. After observing a few of them, including one formed of Czech Tatra KT4D stock, the film turns towards the elevated mainline railway station, which is served by S-Bahn lines S5, S7, and S75. Some regional train services also stop at this station.
In the second part of the film we move underground. After a few shots of the pedestrian subways connecting the platforms of the different underground lines, we start with the underground line U2. This line is part of the small profile network, which uses smaller trains than the other lines at this station. From here we go onwards to the platforms of line U5, which have an unusually high ceiling. U5, part of the large profile network, terminates at Alexanderplatz station and serves several eastern districts of the city. After U5, we take a look at the platforms of U8, which is a north-south underground line, also part of the large profile network.
While the S-Bahn lines running here are solely operated with new-ish Class 481 stock, the underground has a nice mix of old and new rolling stock.
