In this video, we examine how Scathing Mage performs compared to other sets. We will specifically be comparing it to Burning Spellweave and Mother's Sorrow as front bar sets, and adding in Perfected False God's Devotion as a body set.
Scathing Mage has been updated in Harrowstorm to proc from only direct damage, removing the critical hit component. The proc chance remains at 20 percent. The duration and cooldown have both been dropped to 5 seconds as well. This should mean we get higher uptimes on Scathing Mage compared to on live.
Based on our testing, it does seem like Scathing Mage procs more often on the PTS than it does on Live. Further tests got between a 60 to 75 percent uptime on the buff, which is noticeably higher than uptimes I've seen on live. However, despite the increase in uptime, it still doesn't seem to make Scathing Mage the new set to farm. Burning Spellweave was about even with it as both body and front bar sets. Mother's Sorrow just blew Scathing Mage out of the water in both conditions as well.
Ultimately, I don't think this change makes Scathing Mage any more viable than it currently is on live. It remains a decent set to run if you have no other sets to run, but Mother's Sorrow still remains the best set for magicka DPS to run to maximize overall damage. I would not recommend spending time farming for this set specifically, since Mother's Sorrow is still stronger and more easily obtainable.
