2mm 40°C wire (0.0787" thickness, 140°F activation temperature) nitinol shape memory alloy wire. 1 foot of 2mm thick wire taken out of package, at room temperature you can coil it reasonably well, but for a better coil get the 60C wire instead, that one is softer.
Because this is a fairly low temperature wire (body temp is 37C and this is 40C), it will react very quickly to almost boiling water. With lower temperature, the reaction will not be as swift. Because the water was about 90C and the wire was thick, it jumped out of the beaker and we discovered a leak in the beaker.

Please be careful working with nitinol wires especially 1.6mm and up as they can spring violently and puncture objects. Wear protection.
