A number of people have been infected with necrotizing fasciitis, more commonly known as flesh-eating disease, in Japan since the beginning of the year.
There had been a total of 273 cases of flesh-eating bacteria in Japan as of December 2014. Following the appearance of several new cases this year, the total number of cases has risen to 279.
After infection, people initially experience skin inflammation, fever and an increased heart rate. The disease often causes the infected area to appear swollen and those infected usually feel an intense pain. The most common symptom experienced among infected children is fever. The symptoms are usually more severe for adults, and the fatality rate is approximately 30 percent.
The disease has mostly occurred in high-density areas. As of now, 44 people have died from the disease in Tokyo, 28 in Osaka and Kanagawa prefecture has experienced 20 deaths in total.
