On Monday, the Barça striker was the star attraction at the Marca 2017/18 Football Awards, held at the Convent dels Àngels in Barcelona.

First, there was the award for finishing, yet again, as the leading goalscorer in the Spanish first division.

With 34 goals in 36 games, which also won him the Golden Shoe as Europe’s top marksman, Messi adds this to his four previous conquests of the Pichichi in 2009/10, 2011/12, 2012/13 and 2017/18.

It puts him up there with Alfredo Di Stefano, Hugo Sánchez and Quini, the only other men to have topped the scoring charts in La Liga five times, and just one short of Telmo Zarra, who won a record six with Athletic Bilbao in the 50s and 60s.

Player of the season The Argentinian was also honoured with the Trofeo Alfredo Di Stefano as player of the season, an award that he has won more than any other player.
