A Narrative Review of the Role of Perinatal Quality Collaboratives in Promoting Birth Racial Equity
The main objectives of the webinar are:
1. Describe why birth equity efforts are needed in the United States.
2. Discuss the role of quality improvement methods and tools to achieve birth equity.
3. Outline the findings from the narrative review that was published in the Green Journal.

About the Speakers
Audra Meadows, MD, MPH, FACOG:
Audra R. Meadows is a birth optimizer. She cares for women before, during and after pregnancy to ensure positive pregnancy and birth experiences. As an Obstetrician and Gynecologist at The Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Meadows teaches medical students, residents and fellows and devotes time to prenatal care practice innovation and advocacy. Her clinical, public health and policy initiatives aim to prevent preterm birth, infant mortality and maternal morbidity and mortality. For more than 15 years, she has been passionate about achieving health equity and creating value in clinical practice. She implemented group prenatal care into the BWH OB/GYN Residency Practice to better serve those pregnant and parenting. Dr. Meadows has served as Medical Director of the BWH Ambulatory Obstetrics Practice, the Boston Healthy Start Initiative and the BWH Stronger Generations Program. Presently, she co-leads the Perinatal Neonatal Quality Improvement Network of Massachusetts (PNQIN).
Renée Byfield, MS, RN, FNP, C-EFM:
Renée Byfield works as Program Director of the SPEAK UP Implicit and Explicit Racial Bias Education for the Institute for Perinatal Quality Improvement (PQI).
Renée Byfield helps to advance PQI’s mission by expanding the use of quality improvement science to eliminate preventable perinatal morbidity and mortality and end perinatal disparities. Ms. Byfield is dedicated to pursuing health equity and teaching professionals to disrupt, dismantle, and eradicate racism. The goal is “by 2035 SPEAK UP Champions will eliminate perinatal disparities in their organizations and communities throughout the United States.”
Specializing in obstetric and newborn care, Ms. Byfield has diverse experience in nursing leadership, education, perinatal patient safety and quality improvement in hospital, academia, and ambulatory settings. In 2018, she received recognition for nursing excellence from the March of Dimes among other distinctions in her field. Ms. Byfield holds a Master’s in Science degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Pace University. She is the CEO and developer of her own natural skin care line named after her children, Selah Knoelle Body Butters.
Hafsatou Diop, MD, MPH:
Dr. Hafsatou Fifi Diop is the Director of the Division of Maternal and Child Health Research and Analysis, in the Bureau of Family Health and Nutrition, at the Massachusetts Department of Public health. Dr. Diop is a founding member and Principal Investigator of the Perinatal- Neonatal Quality Improvement Network (PNQIN), the statewide perinatal quality collaborative for Massachusetts. Dr. Diop is co-PI of the Massachusetts Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (MMMRC). As PI and co-PI on multiple grants funded by CDC, HRSA, and NIH, Dr. Diop has a strong track record of contributing to science through the many publications she has co-authored (76 available on PbMed). Dr. Diop received her medical degree from the University of Conakry, Guinea in 1990. She completed the 21st International Course of Epidemiology held at the Center for Research (INSERM) in Paris and did her field practicum at the Head Quarters of the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland in 1996. She received her Master of Public Health degree with concentration in MCH in 2000 from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
