What is Athena Swan?
The Athena Swan Charter is a framework to build impactful and sustainable gender equality work across higher education institutions here in Ireland.
Athena Swan doesn't just focus on gender equality, it has expanded to build equality across all ground protected in Irish legislation: age, gender, membership of the Travelling community, ethnicity, family status, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and civil status.
Athena Swan: Why is it important?
Attaining an Athena Swan award is a prerequisite for many funding agencies. In addition to meeting this requirement, there are many benefits to holding an Athena Swan award...
- Embeds equality, diversity and inclusion into our culture, decision-making and partnerships;
- Addresses unequal gender representation across the university at all levels;
- Creates a campus culture that is safe, respectful and supportive;
- Mainstreams sustainable changes to remedy the effects of inequalities and social injustice;
- Fosters collective understanding of intersectional inequalities;
- Supports flexibility and the maintenance of a healthy whole-life balance.
Its impact at DCU
2017: DCU Bronze award attained
2020: DCU Bronze award re-attained
2024: deadline for Silver award application
Key achievements:
- 20% increase in female representation at Head of School level;
- Minimum of 40% of each gender achieved on all senior committees of the university;
- 16% increase in females at Professor level'
- 13% increase in females at Full Professor level;
- Increased supports for female staff through the Women in Leadership suite of initiatives.
