Want to be self sufficient but don’t know where to start?
Making the decision is the first and biggest step you will take.
It can be overwhelming so start small. You don’t need to grow everything all at once.
Start a small garden or grow in pots on a balcony. As long as you start somewhere.
Grow what you know you will eat. Especially if your space and time are limited. There is no point planting gorgeous tomato plants if no one is going to eat them. Planting staples like potatoes, carrots, lettuce, corn and pumpkins are great to start with and don’t take much looking after.
Herbs are a great addition and are also easy to grow. Maybe the kids can be responsible for growing a small herb garden or some pots of herbs at your back door.
Farm animals are great but again start off small. Chickens and ducks are an easy animal to start with. They are dual purpose. Give them your kitchen and garden scraps and they’ll produce delicious eggs and great fertilizer for your garden. Win win 👌
There are pros and cons for both animal. Ducks are more work but they do like to eat slugs and grubs from the garden without doing too much damage. But they can be dirty and smelly. Chickens are not so smelly but will probably scratch up your garden where you don’t want them to. You will need to work on the pros and cons to suit your family.
It’s all about learning what is best for you, your family and your place. And if you can’t do anything yet then start by reading books on homesteading, gardening, self sufficient living. Follow homesteaders on YouTube, instagram, join groups and Facebook and just start putting your dreams and wishes down while you’re waiting for your turn to start.
What stage are you up to?
Doing or learning. What’s your biggest hurdle you need to get over?
