'Genomics' is the study of all of a person's genes (genome). This includes interactions of genes with each other and interactions with the person's environment.
Genomics and Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS; "many genes") are tools to quantify genetic risk for any heritable disease or trait and may be used to predict future health outcomes. We can think of PRS as another estimate of our family history of a particular disease.
In the UK, PRS are frequently cited as a next-in line public health tool to be implemented, and their use in consumer genetic testing as well as patient-facing settings is increasing.
In this talk (~40 min), created for a public audience, Dr Mason summarises a few recent reports about the use of genomics/PRS in the National Health Service (NHS). For example, the Ipsos M.O.R.I. public dialogue, Genome UK, Our Future Health, NHS Health Checks and the HEART pilot study.
