This is an arrangement of a piece I wrote in 1992, a few years after graduating Humber College for music; the sketch was from 1989 or 1990. It is a left over from the end of my "tonal period" (if that term is applicable). It was originally a solo piano piece but I fussed with a number of partial chamber arrangements for piano and violin, cello, quartet, flute and clarinet over the years and finally decided to arrange it for flute and harp this year. It is played on a folk harp (4 octaves), and you can only tune the low string down so far, so I used my acoustic bass for the low harp notes.
I got the harp that my mom built in the 90s a couple of years ago as a present and have been trying to learn to play the darned thing but never get enough time to practice. So, like I did with the strings, I'm starting to write for the instrument in order to force myself to play it from time to time - at least for the recordings. The Variations for Orchestra was my first attempt, and this is my second.
I guess, give me a few years. The flute part is a little challenging and I'm not that good yet - but I can't wait forever and, to quote Trump "it is what it is". Hope you like it.
