Today we take a break from the basic sounds and take a look at the basic rhythm and intonation patterns of English. Why? Because we want to start to understand the bigger picture and the basic things of how the English language flows. Remember that English is a time-stressed language, so the basic rhythm and intonation patterns might be quite different from how your language works.
There are three basic kinds of intonation at the end of a sentence: 1) simple statements (positive and negative) fall at the end; 2) yes/no questions rise at the end with a special question intonation; and 3) wh-questions (what, where, etc...), like simple statements, fall at the end because we're simply trying to fill in the missing content.
