Sceptre of Baghdad. A conversion of Sceptre of Bagdad on the Spectrum published by Atlantis software in 1987. Developed by Jon Wells and published by Psytronik in 1993 and again in 2008 as a special anniversary edition with new inlay art. I'm not sure if it was released on tape apart from the version included on Commodore Format Tape 55 which is missing the intro and ending extras..
In 1996 a special uncut edition of the game was published on the cover of Commodore Zone issue 3 as part of the Supportware pack 3 collection. That version differs from the one shown here and may be the original unreleased version that was due to be published by Atlantis Software before they left the market.
“CYCLOPS - the one eyes giant. MEDUSA - who will turn ya to stone with just a glance. A burning desert, a shark infested river. All these things and more must be passed before the Caliph of Baghdad can recover the sacred sceptre and prove his right to rule his beloved country”
A budget priced collectathon adventure in much the same vein as the Dizzy games. That's not to put anything against it as it is certainly comparable to some of the full price commercial games of the time. Smooth gameplay, well drawn graphics, multiple and lengthy soundtracks all help to make this a great game.
Some differences to the preview/uncut version include different items resulting in a slightly different solution overall. Here you get 5 lives instead of 3 and you can shoot the enemies down not only making the game massively easier but maybe too easy with the extra lives. The controls are different as well with up being jump and fire ...firing. Unfortunately changing items is done with F1 instead of down now making it more awkward. The only real issue I have playing this is that you don't always need to use an object on an object for it to interact. The screen can change the moment you walk on it if you have the right object. This made it tricky to show the interaction of the object and their use to solve the puzzle.
Unlocked using the password provided at the end, the additional disk version ending looks great and was a rare thing on the C64 especially back in 1993. The disk format offered so much potential but often wasnt utilised in uk/eu releases.
