This footage shows trainer Larry Carden returning elephants Betty & Bo to the housing tent after forcing them to at UniverSoul Circus in Philadelphia on November 11, 2018. This particular clip is useful to show how easily the elephants could push down the perimeter fencing and be running through the city streets in a matter of no time. It also shows the common practice of one trainer leading two elephants which doesn't meet APHIS guidelines for potentially dangerous animals to be under direct control of an experienced trainer.
At other venues, I have been able to film Bo under duress, stereotypically swaying as a means of coping with his confinement. The fact we are housing these large, dangerous, stressed out wild animals in close proximity to the public is ludicrous. It has proven to be disastrous and resulted in both people and elephants getting killed, how is this allowed?
UniverSoul has a history of tigers and zebras escaping from their circus grounds, it's only a matter of time before it happens again. Philadelphia needs to ban these cruel and dangerous acts before anyone else gets hurt. Please call your city council member and urge them to introduce a bill!
Support the Traveling Exotic Animal & Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA), federal bill H.R.2863/S.2121 which would ban these acts across the US. Please ask your legislators to support this important legislation.
