John Deacon contributed to Queen primarily as a bassist throughout his career. For the last several years, John Deacon is completely away from the limelight. The popular misconception about John Deacon is that he was meek and unassertive. But that is not entirely true.
During a 1976 interview with Capital Radio, Mercury praised Deacon for his contributions to the fifth album 'A Day at the Races'. While talking about the album's tracks, he revealed that people shouldn't underestimate John Deacon.
Freddie Mercury said "That's the end of side one of 'A Day At The Races. That was a track by John Deacon, his contribution to this album. His songs are good and are getting better every time. I'm getting a bit worried, actually."
Then the interviewer told him "He's the quiet one"
Then Freddie Mercury replied "He's sort of quiet, a lot of people think. Don't underestimate him, he's got a fiery streak underneath all that. But I think because I talk so much anyway he likes to let me do all the talking but once people crack that thin ice. Then he is alright. He never stops talking then."
