In February 2020, we embarked on a profound journey to the historic battlegrounds of Verdun, where The Battle of Verdun (Bataille de Verdun) unfolded from 21 February to 18 December 1916. This battle, the longest of World War I, etched its mark on the Western Front in France and played out on the hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse.
Join us as we revisit this pivotal moment in history, where the echoes of bravery and sacrifice still resonate. Our expedition led us to key sites, including the Verdun Memorial and museum, the somber Douaumont Ossuary, and the mighty Forts Douaumont and Vaux. These fortifications bore witness to the ferocious struggle during the Battle of Verdun, with Fort Vaux showcasing the enduring heroism of its garrison, led by Major Sylvain-Eugene Raynal.
Fort Douaumont's capture without a fight, only three days into the Battle of Verdun, left the French Army in shock and set the stage for nine months of relentless combat. Ultimately, it was recaptured by French forces during the First Offensive Battle of Verdun in October 1916.
Experience the history, valor, and the incredible stories of Fort Vaux and Fort Douaumont, and the events that unfolded within their walls. Discover the poignant lessons from the past and the resilience of the human spirit.
