Room to Read says,
Thirumagal is a GEP graduate from Sri Lanka. Raised in the rural village of Hatton, Sri Lanka, the odds for education were not in her favor. Aside from cultural preferences towards boys, she also lived in extreme poverty with her father working as a bottle collector and her mother making paper bags, a craft Thirumagal took on at the age of 10. Collectively they made no more than $2 per day, putting her at the cusp of dropping out until Room to Read’s Girls’ Education Program came to her school. Today she’s studying at the prestigious University of Jaffna and plans to be a professor one day.
