Two days of mourning have begun in Kyrgyzstan for the 75 people killed since violent protests began on Wednesday.

The unrest forced Kirmanbek Bakiyev, the president, to flee the capital while opposition leaders seized control of the capital Bishkek. But Bakiyev insists he is still the country's legitimate leader and has no intention of stepping down.

Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed interim government led by the opposition says it has secured Russian backing and says it will hold new elections in six months.
