If you're familiar with the Philippines, chances are you refer to it as Tansan. The term Tansan actually originated from an old brand of carbonated water, which shares the same name. Back in the early 1900s, when bottles of Tansan soft drink were shipped to the Philippines, they already came equipped with crown caps, thanks to William Painter's invention of the Crown Cork in 1892. Interestingly, there was no specific Tagalog translation for the term "Crown Cork." However, Tansan gained immense popularity among Filipinos, especially due to its distinct crown cap, setting it apart from other beloved soda brands like Coke, RC, Pepsi, 7UP, Royal, and Sprite.
Instead of using the literal translation "Takip ng Bote," the term Tansan gradually became synonymous with the bottle cap. It became a commonly used expression among Filipinos, representing the unique crown cap associated with Tansan and other soda drinks. In fact, alternative terms like "popcap," "soda cap," and "bottlecap" are often used interchangeably with Tansan. Today, Tansan has become deeply ingrained in the Filipino culture, reminding people of their fondness for carbonated beverages and the nostalgia associated with the distinctive crown caps. So, if you find yourself in the Philippines and someone refers to this object as Tansan, now you know the fascinating story behind the evolution of a popular brand into a Tagalog word.
