The surname of two lead characters has a hidden meaning that is actually linked to the movie’s source material in a way. Hogarth and Annie’s second name, Hughes, is a reference to writer Ted Hughes. Hughes was in fact the author of the original 1968 children’s book which the movie version is based on, with the novel’s title being The Iron Man instead of The Iron Giant. It is believed that Warner Bros. wanted to divert any confusion between the movie and the Marvel character of the same name.
