Samuel Langhorne Clemens (a.k.a Mark Twain; 1835-1910) is considered a gifted American author, lecturer, novelist, and humorist. He faced adversity early, having been born two months prematurely and sickly for the first ten years of his life. Twain also endured a number of personal tragedies apparently commonplace in the American South at the time.
He drew on this childhood challenges as well as those affecting rural Mississippi at the time to pen novels, articles, and anecdotes that testified to the resilience of the indomitable human spirit. Twain’s powerful, deep, and folksy quotes about life, growth, family, and friendship continue to inspire many today.
