In an effort to raise health awareness, docomo, in conjunction with mitsubishi electric, have developed a prototype wellness mobile phone designed to monitor a persons health, which can be used in applications ranging from fitness management to dietary control. After entering a range of personal data such as height, weight and age, and by using two electrodes on either end of the phone, users can measure their body fat ratio which is then displayed as a percentage accompanied with an encouraging message. An infrared sensor located on the top of the handset is used to measure the users pulse, and a gas sensor at the base of the phone can be used to measure breath odor. The phone also includes a pedometer and workout monitor which can sense when the user is walking, running or going up or down stairs and accurately calculate the users energy consumption. Docomo has not yet set a date for the commercialization of this technology.
