Following remarks by its navy commander on Ukraine and Crimea that prompted a diplomatic crisis, Germany has come under increasing fire for its cautious attitude toward Russia.
"German arrogance and megalomania" are the words of Ukraine's envoy Andrij Melnyk, who slammed the German navy chief's remarks as an example of "German arrogance and megalomania."
Ukraine welcomes Kay-Achim Schoenbach's resignation, but it is not enough to restore full confidence in German politics. "The Government must reorient itself toward Kyiv," he said on Sunday on Twitter.
While speaking at a think tank over the weekend, Vice Admiral Kai-Achim Schoenbach caused worldwide outrage with his remarks that Russia has no plans to invade Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin deserves respect.
As far as Schoenbach was concerned, Ukraine will never reclaim Crimea, which Russia unjustly acquired in 2014.
It was reported late Saturday by the German Defense Ministry that Schoenbach had resigned as head of the German Armed Forces with immediate effect.
With regard to how best to discourage Russia from continuing its aggression in Ukraine, the NATO alliance has a wide range of views.
