Géricault is passionate about art since his adolescence, but also about horses. The horse is depicted as a second subject: its head in profile is very detailed with an expression in its eyes. He is richly dressed as the officer.
Originally titled "Portrait of Lieutenant M.D." The painting was completed in five weeks in 1812 and was awarded a medal at the Painting Salon 1812-1813.
