The song “Patria y Vida” [Fatherland and Life] has become an anthem of freedom in Cuba and a protest slogan against the dictatorship.
On November 3, 2021, the Cuban rapper El Funky, coauthor of “Patria y Vida,” visited the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. Days before, he was able to leave Cuba, where his colleague, Maykel Castillo, another coauthor of the song, remains imprisoned as do many Cubans after the mass protests in July 11, 2021.
We spoke with El Funky about “Patria y Vida” and the current situation in Cuba.
