Located within Greater London, and around 15 miles southeast of central London, is the town of Orpington.
The first recorded reference to Orpington dates back to 1032 when it was written as 'Orpedingtun', meaning 'farm belonging to Orped [a personal name]' in Old English.
For centuries, Orpington was a small country village surrounded by farmland. About a mile to the north of the town centre of today is St Mary Cray. Historically this was a separate settlement that developed into a small market town. The 'Cray' in the name comes from the River Cray - a tributary of the Thames whose source is at Orpington Pond (where the walk ends). It wasn't until the 19th century that either Orpington or St Mary Cray would see significant growth.
In 1868 the South Eastern Railway opened a station in Orpington. This marked the beginning of its transformation from a quiet village in Kent to a bustling suburban town. Growth remained steady until around the interwar period when the population hit 25,000. Another wave of growth occurred after the Second World War with the drive to rehouse those whose homes had been destroyed in the Blitz. This was coupled with the expansion of London outwards up until the establishment of the Metropolitan Green Belt, which today defines the boundaries of the capital. Orpington is just within the Green Belt as one of the most southeasterly parts of London.
Historically, Orpington was located within the county of Kent up until 1965 with the formation of the ceremonial county of Greater London. Concurrently, the London Borough of Bromley was created. This is the most southeasterly of the 32 London boroughs, and both the biggest, and most sparse in terms of population density.
Famous people from Orpington include Olympic athletes Dina Asher-Smith (100m & 200m) and Joe Choong (modern pentathlon).
