Coffee shops with sexy DJs are very popular places for Vietnamese males to spend their day. Found throughout Vietnam, and rarely seen elsewhere in Southeast Asia. These coffee shops are dark and with air-conditioning. They are open from noon to midnight. DJs are dressed sexy, play songs, and dance during their performance, which usually lasts an hour or so. Occasionally there are dancers who take the attention off the DJ during that one hour. Audiences will tip in person or send a waitress to bring the money to the stage. DJs will get most of the tips and sometimes dancers will get tips as well. I have seen a pile of money change hands and there are big tippers…
Among the audiences, many males spend less than 100,000 dongs a day sitting in the coffee shop all day playing mobile games, watching DJs, and enjoying the cool air-conditioning. Some audiences can be filthy rich and tip everybody ranging from DJs to every waitress. Waitresses are usually pretty and will initiate a chat, they get about 100,000 dongs per customer a day, and they will try to say hi to every customer and hope to get small tips from every customer. I was told they get about 500,000 dongs a day. With a basic salary of a few million dongs a month. They get a good attendants bonus and also a bonus for meeting monthly drink quotas.
There is no display of affection in the shop, people are sitting close to each other, the waitress works long hours and there are no holidays or breaks outside of the shop. And they all seem to be self-employed business people.
When asking about their customers, waitresses have no idea how these male make their money and they all seem unemployed and have no need to support families. Some waitresses are single mothers and support the whole family by getting tips from these male customers. I ask these single mothers do the father pays any money to support the child, the answer is zero, and I ask if the government is doing anything to make the father pay, and they said nothing…. And yet, many prefer to be a single mom… and a male can be the father of many single mom families, and never contact them, and this is quite common in South East Asia.
Before, Vietnamese males’ favorite pastime would be going out to a coffee shop with their pet rooster, and gambling with a rooster fight, which is now illegal in Vietnam. That was replaced by an air-conditioned room with mobile games plus sexy DJs and waitresses.
Hopefully, the next development would be watching VR of their sexy DJs in their air-conditioned room at home with their family. I am glad that I am doing something about it!
