Today's Daily Dose short history film covers the Native American folklore of skinwalkers, which are humans who can morph themselves into animals. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, Skinwalkers of the Navaho Nation.
According to Native American folklore and mainly associated with the Navajos, the broad concept of the skinwalker is of a shapeshifter, a witch-like or sorcerer-like being who is able to change its shape from a human to an animal, and while skinwalkers can change into any animal species they desire, they generally take the form of a coyote or a wolf. In the Navajo language yee naaldlooshii translates to "by means of it, it goes on all fours, and while yee naaldlooshii is perhaps the most common variety of skinwalker seen in horror fiction by non-Native Americans, the yee naaldlooshii is one of many varieties of skinwalkers in Navajo culture.
While the legend of the skinwalker is not well understood outside of Navajo culture, mostly due to reluctance of Navajos to discuss the subject with outsiders, over the years, however, Hollywood has had a field day with skinwalkers, turning Native American folklore into heart-pounding bits of cinematic tension.
While skinwalker sightings remain few and far between in reality, in clinical psychology, there exists a rare psychiatric condition known as clinical lycanthropy, where affected individuals believe passionately that they can transform themselves into animals, making skinwalkers a very real thing in delusional minds everywhere.
And there you have it, Skinwalkers of the Navaho Nation, today on The Daily Dose. Now where’d I put that bone?
