"Despite the Temptations' phenomenal success Kendricks was increasingly pulling away from the group. When things came to a head and he disappeared partway through a week-long run at the Copacabana in New York, the group decided it was time to find a replacement. Ironically it was only a few weeks earlier that he had recorded "Just My Imagination," one of the most beautiful ballads in popular music history."
"As is clear from the group's body language and facial expressions, they were not happy when they performed the song on The Ed Sullivan Show on January 31, 1971. Note that this is the only performance on the whole DVD where the group is sitting down, rather than engaging in their trademark choreography. Kendricks officially left in March 1971, being replaced by Ricky Owens for a hot minute before the group settled on Damon Harris. Further changes were in store as Paul Williams had gradually fallen victim to depression and alcoholism. Consequently, former Distants member Richard Street had been brought in to sing Paul's parts offstage. When Paul's health finally forced him off the road in 1971, Street naturally joined the group onstage."
