Sure it plays like "Bugsy Malone" with squibs and salty language, but so what? Part of the fun of GANGSTER SQUAD is watching how young-sexy-cool its cast makes this glam 40s period crime dram, even with a woefully undernourished script.
It is the one-two punch of Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling that makes the movie work as well as it does. (And it's shame that a wobbly third act nearly diminishes what could have been a great popcorn film.) Still, Gosling leads a cast that truly understands the iconography involved with classic Hollywood gangster films. That GANGSTER SQUAD ultimately misses the target reinforces the frustrating reality that too many times substance is undermined by style. Still, it is exciting to see Gosling's breadth of versatility on display.
Here's Gosling, who has just been named America's Most Wanted Star by People Magazine, caught in this interview from the set of GANGSTER SQUAD, now playing on The MediaJor Channel.
GANGSTER SQUAD is now playing citywide.
