Hanwha Defense is the amalgamation of various defense firms which formerly fell under Hanwha Group. In January 2019, the Hanwha Group established Hanwha Defense by merging its existing affiliates Hanwha Land Systems and Hanwha Defense Systems.
Following the announcement to merge Hanwha Land Systems and Hanwha Defense Systems during a general shareholders meeting in October 2018, a shareholder vote was conducted on 3 January, resulting in the official approval of the merger and the renaming of the resulting entity to "Hanwha Defense".
Hanwha Defense is now responsible for manufacturing the large majority of land systems, including the K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer and K21 infantry fighting vehicle, for the Republic of Korea Armed Forces.
The Hanwha Group is the 7th largest conglomerate in South Korea with 2018 revenues of US$62 billion, assets of US$182 billion, and 44,000 employees in locations spread over 22 countries.
The Hanwha Group operates in a variety of business areas including defense, chemicals, solar energy solutions, construction, finance, services and leisure. After a series of major acquisitions in 2015 and 2016, Hanwha is now the largest defense group of companies in South Korea and ranks 20th globally.
The defense operations of Hanwha are threefold: Ammunition/PGM, Land Systems, and Defense Electronics supported by manpower that is 9,000 strong.
