Adam's is pleased to announce a unique two-day auction which features a curated selection of Asian Art with 550+ lots.
The sale will take place in Dublin and we will offer a 2-day preview of items in Paris at the time of “Asian Spring in Paris” (« Printemps Asiatique Paris »), a premier annual event in Paris dedicated to Asian Art and Antiques.
Amidst the notable consignments in the sale: a collection of rare Chinese antiques from the estate of Mr. Carlos Alfredo Tornquist Altgelt (1885-1953); a major ‘hound’ scroll painting inscribed with the signature of the famous Jesuit painter Giuseppe Castiglione also known as Lang Shining from Mr. Juan Carlos Katzenstein (1925-2018), who served as an Ambassador to the « Holy See », i.e. the governing body for the Vatican and the Catholic Church; a wooden ruyi scepter from the widow of a world-renowned Russian classical composer, Mrs. Rimsky-Korsakov (1833-1878), famous for her portrait painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1874) housed in the collections of the Orsay Museum; Chinese jades which were last sold publicly at Auction house Drouot in the year 1925 upon the death of the collector, a wealthy French astronomist alpinist named Joseph Vallot (1854-1925) and renowned for creating the first observatory on Mont Blanc in 1890 and building an Asian themed salon there which later hosted Pope Pius XI; a rare jade horse formerly in the collection of Baron Pierre DeMenasce (1924-2013), hailing from a family of bankers in Alexandria and renowned as a jade collector, who contributed to a Chinese jade exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1975; a painting inscribed with the signature of Wen Zhengming from a member of the United Nations Commission on Korea based in Pusan in 1950, Mr. Henri Brionval, (1907-1978); an important Edo period 18th century signed arquebus name tsutsu from the Rudolf Ott Collection of Samuraï; a collection of Chinese Republic Period porcelains assembled in the first half of the 20th century by Canton based French-Canadian missionaries referred to as « Les Filles de Canton »; and an 18th century flambé glazed meiping vase from Senor Jorge Casares, Buenos Aires, Argentina, a reputed ornithologist born in a wealthy landowning family and a fellow of W.H. Hudson (1921-1982).
