One of the best movies of the year, The Northman was another smash hit from Robert Eggers, with a stellar cast, amazing visuals and cinematography, and a truly brutal and horrific look on not only the culture of vikings, but also the viciously unfulfilling cycle of revenge. The score was an absolute highlight, utilizing a myriad of different instruments and sounds authentic to the time period to create an atmospherically rich and historical soundtrack. The main theme doesn't play too often, but when it does it perfectly captures the militant, mystical world of The Northman, mainly being performed on a solo string instrument and being bolstered by big percussion and instrumentation for the larger than life moments. There's also a rising motif that plays twice from my recollection that's also included here, and another motif that begins and ends the film just as it does this suite. Not only is the suite and theme indicative of Amleth's revenge mission, but also of the heart and rich world of the film itself.
