The El Karnak Temple, commonly known as Karnak, is located in Luxor which was previously known as Thebes in ancient Egypt . The complex is the largest temple in the world as well as the largest religious building ever created.

- El Karnak is so big that St Peter’s and Notre Dame Cathedrals would fit in it.
- El Karnak is an extraordinary complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons and obelisks.
- The Karnak temple is known as the temple of Amun-Ra.
- An avenue of ram-headed Sphinxes leads to the first pylon (main entrance),
- They symbolize the God Amun, the male god of Thebes (Luxor).
- It dates back to 2055 BC to around 100 AD, it took over 2000 years to build.
- Construction began in the Middle Kingdom continuing till the Ptolemaic.
- Statue of Ramesses II wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt.
- The Great Hypostyle Hall consists of 134 gigantic stone columns.
- Queen Hatshepsut’s Obelisk which is the tallest ancient obelisks.
- Walking around the lucky scarab (Kheper) 7 times is said to give you good luck.
- There is a sacred lake in the temple which was dug by King Tuthmosis III,
- it was used by priests for purification and other rituals.
- It is the second most visited historical site in Egypt after Giza Pyramids.
