In the last two decades Voter ID Laws have spread across the country, and most people now have to show IDs to vote. But is this a bad thing, and can it suppress the right to vote?
Today, Voter ID Laws are on the books in 35 states, but the laws differ from state to state. Some require photo-ID, others don't. Some are strict, others are less so.
Proponents argue the laws can help prevent fraud, while opponents argue they reduce voter turnout and hurts minority, elderly and poor voters.
Most people, no matter their political identification or race, support a requirement to show photo-ID at the polls to prevent fraud, but not a lot of fraud actually occurs.
Not all people have the necessary IDs and getting one can be rather expensive, especially for black and rural Americans.
When a significant portion of the public don't have IDs, you'd expect a voter ID law to reduce voter turnout, but researches get mixed results when attempting to measure the laws' impact on turnout.
