The official speed was a two-route normal of 268.9 mph. The auto was a vigorously adjusted Mercedes-Benz W125 Grand Prix racer; the driver was the 1935 and 1937 European drivers' champion who might secure an extra title in 1938. That unique W125 Rekordwagen is currently on static show at the Mercedes processing plant exhibition hall in Stuttgart, however 80 years prior, its V-12 motor rushed a courageous man down a stretch of the A5 superhighway where Germans today drive to Frankfurt.
The Rekordwagen is at the exhibition hall's end, managed an account along a divider, where it drives a parade of test racers. On the morning of January 28, 1938, Caracciola and his group were under extreme strain to perform.
