Renata Tebaldi singing Mia madre aveva una povera ancella..La canzone del Salice...Ave Maria from Verdi's Otello at the Grand Gala du Disque. 28 September 1962 at the Concertgebouw under the direction of Arturo Basile.
Excerpt from the review in the Nieuw Schiedamse Courant (29/9/62):
RENATA TEBALDI GETS OVATION
"Finally, the appearance of the long awaited and unknown in the Netherlands, super-star Renata Tebaldi, who, from her extensive repertoire sang just three arias, left a somewhat strict aftertaste as she refused to give an encore to a passionate and cheering audience.
What she sang was mesmerizing. It was Un bel di vedremo of Tosca (sic) and the Willow Song and Ave Maria of Desdemona. The perfection of her tone, from silky soft to sharp and strong as a blade, the drama which she intensified with a gentle head movement or a vocal inflection, the power and tenderness of her musical being were a delight for all vocal music lovers. But all this ended too soon. It was just too short. Many who don't know Tosca (sic) and Otello and only came to hear some beautiful singing, must have felt disappointed. "
