An attack by Iran on US forces by Qasem Soleimani was "imminent." That was the claim made by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo earlier.
The US has imposed new sanctions on Iran after its missile attack on American forces in Iraq.
The targets included Iran's manufacturing, mining and textile sectors as well as senior Iranian officials.
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the move at a joint news conference.
In a separate development Pompeo spoke about the recent Ukrainian plane crash and said it was "likely that plane was shot down by an Iranian missile."
