These are just some of the questions that people continue to ask. Who are the migrants? Where are they from? As literally thousands of refugees and migrants, continue to flee from war-torn northern Africa, people are wondering, When will it stop? Unfortunately, the situation has only just started to hit home, when it was recently revealed that a young Syrian boy drowned attempting to cross the Mediterranean. The names of the two boys were Alan Shenu and Hamza al-Khatib.
The image of these two boys has been circulating all over the world, and it has really put into perspective the human cost of this tragedy. A child, a three year old, will die, just for the hope of a better future. It proves to many, uneducated people, that these people aren't just here to supposedly 'steal our jobs', they're escaping, from a world of fear and oppression that anybody would run from.
And yet it is still Germany, that bears most of the brunt of the Refugees. Days ago, news was broken that thousands of migrants were cheered as they attempted to walk from Hungary to the Austrian/ German border. Germans take so many migrants, and their humanity is utterly applaudable, something which many Britons agree with, as seen by the now trending hashtag #refugeeswelcome
And yet the situation shows no signs of slowing.
Here is the transcript if you're interested:
The 2015 European Migrant Crisis, or refugee crisis as it sometimes known, was first coined in April 2015, and it supposedly arose from the growing number of refugees and migrants, attempting to come to European Union countries via the Mediterranean and South Eastern Europe.
The crisis began to gain momentum when hundreds of thousands attempted the journey from war torn northern Africa, to Italy.
Throughout numerous cases, thousands have died in shipwrecks, and as a result the European Union decided to triple its funding in an effort to help the migrants.
Just last year, 626,000 applications for refugee status were made, the highest since 1992, of which 160,000 have been accepted, and a further 23,000 on reapeal.
Of those that have gained protection status most have originated from Syria, Eritrea, or Afghanistan.
However, the number of refugees that go to each country has not been shared equally, with 2/3 of asylum seekers going to four countries, Germany
Sweden,
Italy
and France.
This has led to protest in the UK, with many feeling that the country has not taken enough migrants, the hashtag #refugeeswelcome is now trending all over the internet.
In fact the load has now been shared so heavily by Germany, that they have received more applications for protection status than the whole of the European Union, a clear marker that things are well and truly out of hand.
But what can be done?
In my personal opinion the load needs to be shared out equally across all countries, including the States and Canada, where virtually no migrants have gone.
But the British Prime Minister David Cameron is also right in that the problem must be solved at its root cause, in Syria where people are being manipulated by human Traffickers,
and where the Evil Assad regime has left the country war torn, and many searching for asylum.
