Being able to roll casting is a very important skill to learn as a fly fisherman. Roll casting allows you to be able to cast when there are obstructions directly behind you, which is often the case on a trout stream. Perfecting your roll cast means that you'll be able to make a great presentation to a fish even if there is a bush right behind you.
A poor roll cast often leads the fly line to really hit the water hard which means you'll likely spook some fish with a bad roll cast. ORVIS fly fishing instructor Pete Kutzer explains the ways you can make a roll cast, and improve the distance and presentation of your cast.
